Letter from the King Anent the Treaty with the Algiers

The Letter underwrittin from the King to The Commissioner and Councill Being Read was ordered to be Recorded, wherof the Tenor Follows.

Right trusty and Right Entirely beloved Cousin and Councellor Right trusty and Right welbeloved Cousin and Councellor Right trusty and welbeloved Cousins and Councellors Right Trusty and welbeloved Councellors, and Trusty and welbeloved Councellors, Wee greet yow well. Whereas by a Treaty of Peace and Commerce Concluded betwixt our Royall predecessors, King Charles The 2d, and the Governours of the City and Kingdom of Algiers on the 10th of Aprile 1682, It was agreed That all ships, belonging to any of our Subjects, and meeting with Ships of warr and other vessells belonging to Algiers in any of the seas, not appertaining to our Dominions, should be oblidged to produce a Pass under the hand and seal of the high Admirall, or of the Commissioners for Executing the said office in any of our Dominions. And we having Thought necessary To Renew the said Treaty and to agree with the Government of Algiers, That all vessells and ships belonging to any of our Subjects, as Trade to the Mediterranean Seas, or any other pairts, in the way of the Algerin’s should be Furnished with such passes as Shall purport their belonging to our Subjects and to no forraigner, That no Inconvenience may arise to any of our Subjects of that our ancient Kingdom, by their being Ignorant of the said Treaty, We do Therfore authorize and Require yow To Issue furth a Proclamation in our name, Intimating to all our Subjects the forsaids Treaties and Requireing them to apply for such passes as may secure them in their Trade and Commerce from the Algerines, To the Commissioners for Executeing the office of Lord high Admirall of that our ancient Kingdom, to whom we have given the necessary orders for that End. And yow are to give notice to all our Subjects, That if after the […] day of September next, They are found by the Algirines without such passes, They will Certanly be Seased upon And That Therfore To prevent their Loss and damnadge, They would take care to be tymely furnished, For doing wherof This shall be your Warrant, And so we bid yow heartily Farewell, Given at our Court at Hampton Court, The 26th day of June i700 And of our Reign the i2th year.
