Proclamation For apprehending Captaines Gavin Hamilton Kenneth McKenzie and Kenneth Urquhart
The Proclamation underwritten, being prepared was Read, votted approven and Signed and ordered to be published and Recorded wherof the Tenor Follows.
William By the Grace of God King of Great Brittain France and Ireland, Defender of the faith: To […] macers of our privy Councill, messengers att armes, our Sheriffs in that pairt Conjunctly and severaly Specialy Constitute Greeting: Forasmuchas, It is Informed That Captain Gavin Hamilton, Son to Gawen Hamilton of Kill Captain Kenneth McKenzie, and Captain Kenneth Urquhart were principall Instigators, Actors or Ring leaders of the Tumult That happened within our City of Edinburgh on the Twenty of June last, which proceeded to the unheard-of outrage of Burning and breaking up of Tolbooth doors, Setting free the Prisoners, Specialy Hugh Paterson and James Watson, accused before our privy Councill, for scandalous and Seditious Pamphlets with other Criminalls, and the deforceing of the Magistrats and Town Guards with the Effusion of Blood. Therfore we with advice of the Lords of our privy Councill, Have ordained and heirby Ordain, That all our Leidges be certified, by open Proclamation, of the Saids persones their accession to the said Insolent Tumult and Rable, And in Respect of their absenting and absconding from Justice, do Farder Require all magistrats and officers of our Forces and others, To use their outmost Endeavors to apprehend the forsaids persones, and all out other good Subjects to be assisting to them therin, that they may be brought to Condign Punishment: As also That all our good Subjects, Give notice to the next magistrats Justices of the peace, officers of our Forces and Constables, where They have seen the saids persones or any of them, since the said Twentyeth day of June last, To the Effect they may be apprehended and brought to due Tryall, Likeas we with advice forsaid, Doe heirby promise and assure The Soume of Twelve Hundered pounds Scots money, To any person or persones who shall apprehend any or Each of the persons abovenamed, and deliver him to any of our officers civill or military, to be by by2 them Secured to the End forsaid And we with advice forsaid, Discharge any of our subjects To Shelter, harbour, or any ways assist or Supply the saids persones, or any of them upon their highest perrill. Our Will is Heirfore, And we charge yow Strictly and Command, That Incontinent these our letters seen ye pass To the mercat Cross of Edinburgh and to the Remanent mercat Crosses of the severall head Burghes of the haill shyres and Stewartries, within this our ancient kingdom, and Thereat in our name and authority By open Proclamation make Intimation of the premises, That none pretend Ignorance, And ordaines these presents to be printed. Given under our Signet att Edinburgh The Twenty Fyfth day of July and of our Reign the Twelfth year i700. Sic subscribitur.
