Act

Act for the magistrates of Glasgow

Concerning the petition given in to the lords of their majesties’ privy council by the magistrates of the city of Glasgow showing that where their lordships by their proclamation in April last empowered and required all magistrates to take information of whatever ministers either in kirks or meeting houses did not pray for their majesties King William and Queen Mary either in express words or in terms so specific as might give grounds to believe they meant [not] their said majesties, the petitioners in obedience thereto have examined several of the said ministers whose examinations taken by the petitioners and subscribed with their own hands are produced with the said petition, whereby their lordships have evidently found that none of those persons who were examined either do or intend to obey their lordships’ commands contained in the said proclamation, and the petitioners being desirous to keep the peace and quiet of the place which is threatened to be disturbed by the foresaid preachers’ refractoriness, and therefore craving that the said lords would be pleased to empower and allow the petitioners to discharge their preaching and shut up their meeting houses, and if need be to remove them out of their town according to law and act of parliament and the said lords’ practice in similar cases as the said petition bears. The said lords of their majesties’ privy council having considered this petition given in to them by the above magistrates of Glasgow, they hereby authorise and empower the said magistrates to call before them Mr Thomas Moubray, tutor to the children of [John Murray], laird of Polmaise, Mr John Kinnear, private chaplain, Mr Alexander Kinnear, Mr Hugh Blair, Mr James Gadderer, former minister at Kilmacolm, and Mr William Fisher, former minister at Eastwood, whose examinations before the said magistrates were read in presence of the said lords and to interrogate those persons whether they will give it under their hand that for the future they will pray for their majesties King William and Queen Mary as king and queen of this realm, and in case of their refusal to do so, to banish them from the said town of Glasgow, suburbs thereof and jurisdiction of the same.
