Act

Act to Mr John Gray for a stipend

Concerning a petition given in to the lords of their majesties’ privy council by Mr John Gray, late minister at Aberlady, showing that since the petitioner was deprived (about a fortnight before Michaelmas 1689) a whole year’s stipend having been disposed of to one that had no interest or acquaintance in the place, and now the stipend of 1691 being at their lordships’ disposal to which none has any pretension, that the said lords may bestow it on the petitioner in regard he is known to all to have neither principle nor inclination to give any offence to the government, but on the contrary to pray expressly (as is enjoined by law) for their present majesties and all in authority under them, he supplied the charge ten months after his deprivation at the desire of the heritors by those that gave obedience to the law when there was none else to offer it, that he stands firmly possessed of the universal affection of the whole parish expressed by a unanimous invitation to him subscribed and consented to by them all, and in regard others in his circumstances partake of the same favour of their lordships’ clemency and goodness, and therefore humbly craving to the effect underwritten as the said petition bears. The said lords of their majesties’ privy council having considered this petition given in to them by the said Mr John Gray, late minister at Aberlady, they hereby allow the petitioner the stipend of the said kirk of Aberlady for the whole crop and year of God 1691, and ordain him to be readily answered, obeyed and paid thereof by the heritors, feuars, liferenters, titulars, tacksmen of teinds, tenants, possessors and others liable in payment of the same, and ordain letters of horning to be directed at his instance against them for that effect upon production of a decreet of locality, and in case there be none ordain those liable to make payment of their respective proportions according as the same shall be decerned by the judge ordinary.
