Act

Liberation Peter Chrystie

Concerning the petition given in to the lords of their majesties’ privy council by Peter Chrystie periwig-maker in Dundee present prisoner in the tolbooth of Edinburgh, showing that where the petitioner being eight weeks prisoner for alleged drinking King James his health and forcing others to do so, the truth is the petitioner knows not perfectly what passed for this much that it is not only known he was at that time overtaken by drink and fell foul with his companions to the hazard of being strangled in his own cravat and stabbed with a knife as appears by a subscribed declaration by way of instrument produced under the hands of notaries, ministers, and other famous persons testifying the acknowledgements of the very soldiers who apprehended the petitioner in the alleged fact, so that it is probable there may be something of misrepresentation in the case, and for clearing their lordships of the petitioner’s affection to the government, he is content to take the oath of allegiance to their present majesties. Therefore and seeing the petitioner (as appears by the declaration produced) has been severely treated in his drink, and that he does not mind the matter alleged against him and is but a poor tradesman whose wife and children are at the point of starving through the petitioner’s being hindered [in] the exercise of his trade by his long imprisonment, and therefore humbly hoping the said lords will thereby find him sufficiently punished for his being in drink and accept of his taking the oath of allegiance for purging him from any disaffection to the government and to cause set the petitioners [at liberty]. The said lords of their majesties’ privy council having considered this petition given in to them be the within Peter Chrystie with the instrument mentioned therein and produced therewith, they hereby give order and warrant to the magistrates of Edinburgh and keeper of the tolbooth there to set the petitioner at liberty forth of the same in respect he has sworn and signed the oath of allegiance and signed the assurance appointed by act of parliament before any of the lords of their majesties’ privy council.
