Act

Liberation John Reid printer

Concerning the petition given in to the lords of their majesties’ privy [council] by John Reid, printer in Edinburgh, showing that where the petitioner having [been] incarcerated within the tolbooth of Edinburgh for reprinting a ballad, and after some months imprisonment having petitioned their lordships for liberation upon caution to answer when called, but in respect their lordships were not fully informed at the time of the true state of the affair, the said petition was waved, and it is hoped their lordships will seriously consider that what the petitioner did was merely out of ignorance, the ballad being publicly in the streets before the petitioner printed the same, and that it is notoriously known what he has suffered in, the late government having taken from him at one time seven hundred and fifty books at ten shillings Scots per piece printed by him against Popery. And the petitioner never designed to print or reprint anything against their majesties’ government either in Church or state and is willing to take the oath of allegiance to their majesties. And having lain in prison these twenty two weeks by past it’s hoped their lordships will consider his sad condition with his wife and numerous family of young children who by the petitioner’s long imprisonment are in a condition of starving, and therefore craving to the effect underwritten as the said petition bears. The said lords of their majesties’ privy council having considered this petition given in to them by the above John Reid hereby give order and warrant to the magistrates of Edinburgh and keeper of their tolbooth to set the petitioner at liberty forth thereof in respect he has first sworn and signed the oath of allegiance and also signed the assurance to their majesties King William and Queen Mary appointed by act of parliament, and likewise found sufficient caution acted in the books of privy council that he shall live peaceably under the present government of their majesties King William and Queen Mary, and that he shall not act, counsel, contrive anything in prejudice thereof nor shall converse nor correspond with rebels, and that he shall appear before the said lords of privy council when called for under the penalty of five hundred merks Scots money.
