Act

Liberation Elizabeth Urquhart

Concerning the petition given in to the lords of their majesties’ privy council by Elizabeth Urquhart, prisoner in the tolbooth of Edinburgh, showing that the petitioner having formerly presented a supplication to the said lords bearing that she had been prevailed with from her affection to Arthur Urquhart her near relation to become the instrument of his escape, she being a woman utterly ignorant of the ill consequences of such an action, which she has already sustained by so long imprisonment and other bad usages, and that she had been detained ten weeks in close prison without converse of either friend, relation, or stranger that might afford her anything of maintenance of life, there lordships having considered the said petition did by their act on 10 November last allow the petitioner the benefit of the open prison as the said petition bears. The petitioner does now humbly represent that her poverty is such that she is not able to maintain herself in prison any longer, not having so much as a farthing, and that she is become so sickly in body through the long imprisonment, bad diet, and great poverty that unless their lordships pity her condition and set her at liberty she is undone, And therefore craving to the effect underwritten as the said petition bears. The said lords of their majesties’ privy council having considered this petition given in to them by [the] within Elizabeth Urquhart they hereby give order and warrant to the magistrates of Edinburgh and keeper of the tolbooth thereof to set the prisoner at liberty forth of the same.
