Commission to the Earl of Melville to be Lord Privy Seal

William and Mary by the grace of God king and queen of Great Britain, France and Ireland, and defenders of the faith, to all good men to whom our present letters will have come, greetings. Know that we, considering that it leads to the profit of our service that the present commission of our privy seal of this our ancient kingdom of Scotland should be entrusted to a certain unique person, and having found enough the distinguished loyalty and sufficient abilities of our most faithful and dear kinsman and councillor George earl of Melville, with which he is altogether suitable for performing and exercising faithfully the duty and office of keeper of our privy seal of the said kingdom, therefore have nominated, made, constituted and ordained, and by the tenor of the presents nominate, make, constitute and ordain the said George earl of Melville (during our pleasure only) lord keeper of our privy seal of the said kingdom. Equally we give, grant and assign to him the duty and office of keeper of our privy seal with the position and order of precedence immediately after the president of our privy council of the said kingdom, along with all honours, privileges, dignities, fees, casualties, profits and service dues whatsoever pertaining to it, to be enjoyed and taken pleasure in by himself so fully and freely in whatever respect and condition which the same things were possessed and enjoyed formerly, or could be possessed by whoever of his predecessors in the said position and office at any time past. With power also to the said George Earl of Melville of nominating and appointing deputies for keeping the said privy seal, and of creating and appointing clerks and scribes to the said seal (for whom he will answer), and generally of doing and exercising all and single things pertaining previously to the privilege and liberty of the said office, or what things will be known to pertain in whatever way in the future. All which things to be done legitimately by the same George earl of Melville in performing the said duty and office, we hold firm and reckoned and will hold. In testimony whereof, we have ordered our great seal to be appended to the presents. At our court of Kensington on 29 December 1691, and in the third year of our reign. By the sign manual of our supreme lord the king above written.
