Letter from the king’s majesty for levying recruits

The Letter underwreitten being read wes ordered to be recorded Whereof the tenor followes
Sic subscribitur William Rex
Right trusty and right well beloved cousins and councillors, right trusty and entirely beloved etc (as in the preceding Letter), wee greet you well. Whereas wee have ordered twenty four men to be drawn out of the strong companies and eighteen of all the ordinary companies of the foot in that our ancient kingdom to recruit the Scots troops in Flanders without trouble to the country, yet there will be more necessity to fill up all our Scots regiments here, therefore it is our pleasure that you give your warrant authorising those officers who are sent over to beat drums for making as many more recruits as will complete their regiments, and we do expect your countenance and assistance to them that the recruits may be well made. And as our free lieges are not to be forced, so such as have once engaged are not to be allowed thereafter to desert. Wee doubt not of your care both to prevent abuses and to have the recruits effectually made. And so wee bid yow heartily farewell. Given at our camp at Grammene near Deinze 14 September 1692 and of our reign the fourth year. By his majesty’s command sic subscribitur John Dalrymple.
