Recommendation in favour of several of the officers of the forces to the treasury

Concerning the petition given in to the lords of their majesties’ privy council by Captain Lieutenant Patrick Home, Lieutenant John Campbell, Cornet Samuel Veitch and Captain James Muir, late in [Henry Erskine] Lord Cardross his regiment of dragoons, Captain James Sleigh and Ensigne William Keir, late in [John Gordon] Lord Strathnaver’s regiment of foot and Captain John Stewart, late captain of granadeers in [Alexander Gordon] viscount of Kenmure’s regiment showing that where the petitioners did from the first raising of the said regiments put themselves to great charges and expenses for serving his majesty and the present government, both by the charge of horse and furniture to themselves and likewise in levying a quota of men suitable to their stations, and when the forsaid regiments were disbanded there was resting to the petitioners above nine months pay, through the not payment whereof the petitioners have been much troubled and straightened by their wants, yet they are So far desirous to evidence their duty and loyalty to his majesty and to express their affection to the present government, that they are resolved to go and serve as volunteers in Flanders, and for that end have already engaged themselves to go along with [Archibald Campbell] earl of Argyll as such (as his lordship has testified) unless the want of some small provision for their accomodation and preparing such things as shall be necessary for serving in such a campaign as this summer’s in Flanders is expected to be, do lett and hinder their dutiful intentions, and it being both his majesties’ and the said lords of privy council their inclinations to give all encouragement to such as are willing to serve their majesties either by sea or land against the common enemy, it was hoped that the said lords would be graciously pleased to allow the petitioners such a competence as their lordships should think fit out of their said bygone arrears towards the equipping of each of them for this campaign according to their several stations, and for that end to recommend them to the lords of treasury for a precept and present payment thereof, and therefore craving that their lordships would be pleased in consideration of the premisses to recommend the petitioners to the lords commissioners of their majesties’ treasury for causing make payment to them of such a competence as their lordships should think fit out of their said bygone arrears towards the equipping of each of them for this campaign according to their several stations as aforesaid, as the said petition bears. The said lords of their majesties’ privy council having considered this petition given in to them by the above Captain Lieutenant Patrick Home, Lieutenant John Campbell, Cornet Samuel Vetch, Captain James Muir, Captain James Sleigh, Ensign William Keir and Captain John Stewart they hereby recommend to the lord commissioners of their majesties’ treasury to cause present payment be made to each one of the said petitioners of as much of the bygone arrears resting to each of the forenamed persons as their lordships should think fit for equipping them according to there service in this campaign.
