Order to Sir James Leslie for sending pairtyes to guaird the recruitts

The Lords of there majesties privie Councill Considering that the ships who are appoynted for transporting the souldiers drawen out of the standing forces and Garisones for recruitting there majesties troops in Flanders are not yet in readiness And that the Convoyes who are to accompany these ships are not yet arryved have ordered these recruitts to remaine in the severall prisones following viz The number of Fifty six of them in the tolbooth of Borrowstounness The Numbert of Tuo Hundreth and Fourty Four of them in the tolbooth of Mussleburgh Haddingtoun and Leith as they shall be divyded in these tolboothes The number of Three score Eightein of them in the tolbooth of the Canongate The Number of Ane Hundreth and Fourty eight of them in the tolboothes of Burntisland and Kinghorne as they shall be divyded in these tolboothes The Number of Threttie six of them in the tolbooth of Queensferrie The number of Ane hundreth and Thretty Four of them in the tolbooth of Linlithgow The Number of sixtie eight of them in the tolbooth of Kirklistoune The number of Ane Hundreth and Fyftein of them in the tolboothes of Kirkaldie and Dysert as they shall be divyded in the saids tolboothes And the number of Fourscore and Threttein of them in the tolboothes of Dumferling and Innerkeithing as they shall be divyded in these tolboothes And the saids Lords doe hereby requyre Sir James Leslie Comander in cheiff for the tyme of there Majesties forces within this Kingdome with all diligence To cause March sufficient pairtyes of dragoons or foot as he shall think best to the respective places forsaids where the saids recruitts are And to send such officers as he shall think fittest along for Comanding each pairty who are to secure and Keep guaird upon the saids recruitts and take care that none of them escape And appoints the said Sir James To Give strict orders to these pairtyes and there officers That the tolboothes or other roumes or places wherein they are putt doe receave no prejudice hurt nor dammadge by the saids recruitts any maner of way as the said pairtyes and there officers will be ansuerable at there highest perrill.

The lords of their majesties’ privy council, considering that the ships appointed for transporting the soldiers drawn out of the standing forces and garrisons for recruiting their majesties’ troops in Flanders are not yet in readiness, and that the convoys which are to accompany those ships have not yet arrived, have ordered those recruits to remain in the various prisons following, viz: the number of 56 of them in the tolbooth of Bo’ness; the number of 244 of them in the tolbooths of Musselburgh, Haddington and Leith as they shall be divided in those tolbooths; the number of 78 of them in the tolbooth of the Canongate; the number of 148 of them in the tolbooths of Burntisland and Kinghorn as they shall be divided in those tolbooths; the 36 of them in the tolbooth of Queensferry; the number of 134 of them in the tolbooth of Linlithgow; the Number of 68 of them in the tolbooth of Kirkliston; the number of 115 of them in the tolbooths of Kirkcaldy and Dysart as they shall be divided in the said tolbooths; and the number of 93 of them in the tolbooths of Dunfermline and Inverkeithing as they shall be divided in those tolbooths. And the said lords hereby require Sir James Leslie, commander in chief for the time of their majesties’ forces within this kingdom with all diligence to cause march sufficient parties of dragoons or foot as he shall think best to the respective places foresaid where the said recruits are and to send along such officers as he shall think most fit for commanding each party, who are to secure and keep guard on the said recruits and take care that none of them escapes; and they appoint the said Sir James to give strict orders to those parties and their officers that the tolbooths or other rooms or places wherein they are put receive no prejudice, hurt or damage by the said recruits in any way, as the said partyes and their officers will be answerable at their highest peril.
