Order anent Fencible men in Edinburgh and there officers the members of the Colledge of Justice and the Mint house

The Lords of there Majestyes privie Councill haveing appointed the Fencible men in the Citie of Edinburgh to randevouze in tuo distinct regiments And haveing alreadie nominate generall officers to these Regiments The saids Lords upon ane address presented to them be the Magistrates of the said Citie Doe hereby Nominate and appoint the persones underwritten to Comand the saids regiments in the Capacityes and stationes following viz The proveist of Edinbugh to be Comandant of both Regiments Robert Cheisly merchand and present moderator Captain of the wholl train bands of the Citie To Collonell of the First Regiment And Captain Gilbert Somervell present Deacon of the taylors to be his Leivetennent Colonell Robert Inglis Goldsmith and present Conveener of the trades to be Collonell of the second regiment And Alexander Wood merchand and one of the present Captains of the said trainbands to be his Leivetennent Colonell with power to the toun Councill of Edinburgh to Choose the other officers of both Regiments And recalls the former order of Councill In So farr as it is hereby2 altered And recomend to the Lord Viscount Stair to speak to the Lords of Sessione and other members of the Colledge of Justice anent the putting themselves in a militarie posture againest the present designed Invasione and to report to the Councill and allowes the maisters3 members and servants in his majesties mint house to make up a Companie by themselves to be Comanded distinctly by there oune officers And declares all other Inhabitants in Edinburgh to Come under the Name of Fencible men Except such as being Landed men in the countrey are to randevouze with the heretors.

Order concerning fencible men in Edinburgh and their officers, the members of the college of justice and the mint house

The lords of their majesties’ privy council, having appointed the fencible men in the city of Edinburgh to rendezvous in two distinct regiments, and having already nominated general officers to those regiments, the said lords upon an address presented to them by the magistrates of the said city, hereby nominate and appoint the persons underwritten to command the said regiments in the capacities and stations following, viz: the provost of Edinburgh to be commandant of both regiments; Robert Cheisly, merchant and present moderator captain of the whole trained bands of the city as colonel of the first regiment, and Captain Gilbert Somerville, present deacon of the tailors, to be his lieutenant colonel; Robert Inglis, goldsmith and present convener of the trades, to be colonel of the second regiment, and Alexander Wood, merchant and one of the present captains of the said trained bands to be his lieutenant colonel, with power to the town council of Edinburgh to choose the other officers of both regiments. And they recall the former order of council in so far as it is hereby altered, and they recommend to the Lord Viscount Stair to speak to the lords of session and other members of the college of justice about putting themselves in a military posture against the present designed invasion and to report to the council, and they allow the masters, members and servants in his majesties’ mint house to make up a company by themselves to be commanded distinctly by their own officers, and they declare all other inhabitants in Edinburgh to come under the name of fencible men, except such as being landed men in the country are to rendezvous with the heritors.
