Procedure

Comittee anent men and provisions Lately got in to the Bass

The Lord High Chancellour acquainted the Lords of there Majestyes privie Councill That his Lordship haveing receaved Informatione of some men and provisions got in to the Bass And that a litle boat went from Fisherraw and did meet with a larger which came to the coast of Fyff and receaved the men and provisiones out of the Large boat and Carryed them to, and Livered them at the Bass And that His Lordship hade given orders to the Bailzie of the Regality and Bailzies of the toun of Mussleburgh to bring to this place the Maisters and and servants about Stainiehill and the Customer and waiter who were upon duety Sunday or Monday eight dayes at which tyme The provisiones were carryed in as said is with such others as they should find ground to suspect hade ane hand in this matter and that accordingly severall persones are brought to this place The saids Lords of there Majestyes privie Councill doe hereby recomend to the Lord Polwarth and Sir John Lauder of Fountainhall one of the senators of the Colledge of Justice to Call for and examine such persones as are brought to this place upon the accompt forsaid And to take exact tryall of what they know in the said matter And what hands these persones or any others have hade in Conveying the men and provisions for saids to the Bass And Recomends to the said Comittee to meet this day at four acloack in the afternoon and to make report to the Councill tomorrow in the forenoon

Procedure

Committee concerning men and provisions lately taken in to the Bass

The lord high chancellor acquainted the lords of their majesties’ privy council that his lordship having received information of some men and provisions got in to the Bass and that a little boat went from Fisherrow and did meet with a larger which came to the coast of Fife and received the men and provisions out of the large boat and carried them to, and delivered them at the Bass, and that his lordship had given orders to the bailie of the regality and bailies of the town of Musselburgh to bring to this place the masters and servants about Staneyhill and the customer and waiter who were upon duty Sunday or Monday a week previously at which time the provisions were carried in, as said is, with such others as they should find ground to suspect had a hand in this matter and that accordingly several persons are brought to this place. The said lords of their majesties’ privy council hereby recommend to [Patrick Hume] Lord Polwarth and Sir John Lauder of Fountainhall one of the senators of the college of justice to call for and examine such persons as are brought to this place upon the account foresaid and to take exact trial of what they know in the said matter, and what hands these persons or any others have had in conveying the men and provisions foresaid to the Bass, and they recommend to the said committee to meet this day at four o’clock in the afternoon and to make report to the council tomorrow in the forenoon.
