Commission to Cockburn of Ormiston to be Lord Justice Clerk

The following commission in favour of Adam Cockburn of Ormiston, expedited under the great seal to be lord justice clerk, being read and the said lord justice clerk being called in and having sworn and signed the oath of allegiance and signed the assurance to their majesties appointed by act of parliament, was received and admitted as a privy councillor by virtue of his office, and the said lord high chancellor, having delivered to him his commission (which he received upon his knee), did administer to him the oath de fideli. The council appointed the said commission to be recorded in their books, whereof the tenor follows. William and Mary by the grace of God king and queen of Great Britain, France and Ireland, and defenders of the faith, to all good men to whom our present letters will have come, greetings. Since it is abundantly satisfied to us concerning the integrity and distinguished qualities of character of Adam Cockburn of Ormiston, with which he is entirely suitable for performing and exercising faithfully the duty and office within expressed, know therefore that we have nominated, constituted and ordained, just us by these our letters we nominate, constitute and ordain the same Adam Cockburn, during our pleasure only, our justice clerk in our more ancient kingdom of Scotland. Likewise we give, grant and assign the same duty and office of justice clerk to the forenamed Adam Cockburn, during the foresaid interval, with all honours, privileges, immunities, fees, emoluments and casualties whatsoever pertaining to it, to be cherished and enjoyed by him so fully and so freely in whatever respect and condition, which any of his predecessors in the said office enjoyed, or could enjoy in any time past. Without prejudice yet to James Montgomery, younger of Langshaw, who will continue as clerk of justiciary by virtue of the commission signed by our royal hand. In testimony whereof, we have ordered our great seal to be appended to these presents at our court of Kensington on 28 November 1692, and in the fourth year of our reign. By the signature of our supreme lord the king above written. Written to the great seal and registered on 9 December 1692, subscribed William Kerr, sealed at Edinburgh 9 December 1692, subscribed Alexander Inglis.
