Comittee for putting the Countrey in a posture of defence

The Lords of there Majestyes privie Councill doe hereby nominate and appoint the Earles of Drumlangrig Linlithgow Lothian and Breadalban, the Viscount of Tarbat The Lords Cardross and Beilhaven, the Lairds of Blackbarrony and Steivinstoun and Sir Thomas Livingstoun Comander in cheif of ther majestyes forces within this Kingdome to be a Comittee for considering how this Countrey may be putt in a posture of defence against any forraigne Invasion or Intestine Insurrection whether by raising the militia in wholl or in pairt or by what other methods or means They shall think fitt and to call upon proposealls for this effect and report there opinion in this matter to the Councill from tyme to tyme And Recomends to the said Comittee to meet the morrow at nyne acloack in the forenoon for the first dyet And thereafter at such other dyetts as they shall appoynt And declares any fyve of the above number to be a quorum And Lykewayes recomends to them to Consider the address be some of there Majestyes subjects in the shyre of Louthian offering to mantain a regiment of men for fourty dayes or Longer upon there oune expenses againest any present designe of Invasione from France by French and Irish papists And how the said offer may be made effectuall And what persones doe Concurr with the Subscrybers of the said address And to meet with these Gentlemen the Subscrybers and consider with them in this matter as also to Consider any voluntar offers that hereafter shall be made of Levyeing men for there majestyes service in the Countryes defence

The lords of their majesties’ privy council do hereby nominate and appoint the earls of Drumlanrig, Linlithgow, Lothian and Breadalbane, the Viscount of Tarbat, the Lords Cardross and Belhaven, the lairds of Blackbarony and Stevenson and Sir Thomas Livingston, commander in chief of their majesties’ forces within this kingdom to be a committee for considering how this country may be put in a posture of defence against any foreign invasion or internal insurrection, whether by raising the militia in whole or in part or by what other methods or means they shall think fit, and to call upon proposals for this effect and report their opinion in this matter to the council from time to time, and they recommend to the said committee to meet tomorrow at 9 o’clock in the forenoon for the first diet and thereafter at such other diets as they shall appoint, and they declare any five of the above number to be a quorum, and likewise they recommend to them to consider the address by some of their majesties’ subjects in the shire of Lothian offering to maintain a regiment of men for forty days or longer upon their own expenses against any present design of invasion from France by French and Irish papists, and how the said offer may be made effectual and what persons concur with the subscribers of the said address and to meet with these gentlemen the subscribers and consider with them in this matter, as also to consider any voluntary offers that hereafter shall be made of levying men for their majesties’ service in the country’s defence.
