Committee for Mr Alexander Young

Concerning the petition given into the lords of their majesties’ privy council by Mr Alexander Young, late minister at Culross, showing that the petitioner, by a committee of the convention of estates in 1689 (with his colleague Mr Robert Wight, first minister at Culross) being discharged to exercise their ministry within the said parish as having disobeyed the act of the convention of estates in not reading the proclamation and praying for their majesties King William and Queen Mary, notwithstanding that it was ordered by the express words of the proclamation that it should be read by the minister preaching in the forenoon, immediately after sermon, and that the petitioner being only second minister and preaching only in the afternoon could not read the proclamation in the terms of the act, and that before any sentence was pronounced against the petitioner he declared his willingness to pray for King William and Queen Mary in express terms and has frequently done it since whenever he had occasion to preach in other churches, whereby it appears that the foresaid sentence, in so far as concerns the petitioner, has procdeded upon mistakes and is altogether groundless and is very heavy not only in hindering the petitioner to exercise his ministerial function to which he judges himself in conscience obliged but also in depriving the petitioner of his only means of subsistence and reducing him and his numerous family to a starving condition, and therefore craving that the said lords would be pleased to take the premises to their consideration and to take off the effect of the foresaid sentence, which is most competent to their lordships, being imposed by a civil authority, and to declare the petitioner capable of exercising the ministry at the foresaid church of Culross or at any other church to which he shall be legally called, as the said petition bears. The said lords of their majesties’ privy council, having considered this petition given in to them by the above Mr Alexander Young, they hereby recommend to the Viscounts of Tarbat and Stair and Sir Archibald Murray of Blackbarony to consider the said petition and report their opinion to the council what they think fit to be done in the above matter and process to which the same relates.
