[Committee for levying seamen]

The Lords of their Majesties privy Councell Having heard a Letter Direct from his Majestie to them anent the Levying of seamen for their Majesties service redd in their presence They heirby nominat and appoynte the Earls of Morton and Leven The Lord Raith Thesaurer Depute Sir John Maxuell of Pollock and Sir Robert Sinclar of Steivensone To be a Committie for Considering his Majesties said Letter And Recommends to them to prepare a draught of a proclamatione for raising of the said seamen offering them all Encouradgement as in his Majesties said Letter And also to prepare a draught of a Letter to be wryten from the Councell To the Magistrats of the severall seatouns Desyring them to send to Leith such of their seamen as they can Engadge In their Majesties service and to Consider what methods were folloued in raising the former Levy of seamen And what will be necessarie to be followed in this Levy For making the same tymeouslie effectuall And appoyntes any three of the above Committie To be a Quorum And Recommends to them to make their Report against the nixt meeting of Councell

The lords of their majesties’ privy council having heard a letter directed from his majesty to them concerning the levying of seamen for their majesties’ service read in their presence, they hereby nominate and appoint the earls [James Douglas] earl of Morton and [David Leslie] earl of Leven, [Alexander Melville] Lord Raith, treasurer depute, Sir John Maxwell of Pollok and Sir Robert Sinclair of Stevenson to be a committee for considering his majesty’s said letter and recommend to them to prepare a draft of a proclamation for raising of the said seamen offering them all encouragement as in his majesty’s said letter and also to prepare a draft of a letter to be written from the council to the magistrates of the several sea towns desiring them to send to Leith such of their seamen as they can engage in their majesties’ service, and to consider what methods were followed in raising the former levy of seamen, and what will be necessary to be followed in this levy for making the same timeously effectual, and appoint any three of the above committee to be a quorum, and recommend to them to make their report against the next meeting of council.
