Warrant

Warrant to Sir Thomas Livingston for detaining the three regiments in Leith road

The lords of their majesties’ privy council considering that the repeated rumours of an invasion from France of French and Irish Catholics require that the nation should be put in the best posture of defence that can be, and for that effect it is not only necessary that the forces of the Scots establishment should be posted to the best advantage but that the three regiments at present lying in the road of Leith, ready to go abroad, should be detained for the security and defence of this kingdom and that although they are upon the English establishment yet they should not be allowed to go abroad until the threatened danger is over or special orders renewed for their setting sail. Therefore the said lords hereby recommend to and require Sir Thomas Livingston, commander in chief etc, that he put a stop to the sailing of the said three regiments and that he have them disembark or continue aboard as he shall think fit so that he keeps them within this kingdom till their majesties pleasure is known, for which an express is to be dispatched.
