Procedure

Commission In favours of The Earle of Levine To be Commander in Chieff of the forces in Scotland

Commission under her Majesties Royall hand and Signet In favours of David Earle of Levine To be Commander in chieff of her Majesties forces within this Kingdome Being presented by Sir Robert Forbes Clerk to her Majesties privie Councell, The Samen was Read and ordered to be recorded, and therafter was delyvered by the Marques of Montrose Lord President of Privie Councell to the said Earle, who receaved the Samen on his knee as use is. Follows the Tenor of the Said Commission.

Anne by the Grace of God Queen of Great Brittaine, France and Irland defender of the faith etc To our Right trustie and well beloved Cousine and Councellor David Earle of Levine, Greeting, Wee reposeing a speciall trust and confidence in your Loyaltie, Courage and good Conduct, Doe by these presents Nominat constitute and Appoynt yow to be Commander in Chieff off all and Sundrie our forces, horse, foot and Dragouns, which presently are, or heirafter shall be Imployed or raised for our Service, whither Standing forces, Militia or other forces whatsoever within our antient Kingdome of Scotland, Yow are therfore carefully and diligently to discharge the duty of Commander in Chieff of our forces By doeing and performeing all and all maner of things therunto belonging; And wee heirby requyre all officers and Souldiers of all and Singular our forces aforsaid, To honour and obey yow as their Commander in Chieff, And yow are lykwayes to observe and follow Such orders and directions As yow shall from tyme to tyme receive from ws, or our privie Councell of that our Kingdome, According to the rules and discipline of warr In pursuance of the great trust heirby reposed in yow, Ordaining this our Commission to continue in force wntill it shall be discharged by ws in wrytting, Given under our Royall hand and Signet at our Court att […] the Second day of March 1705/6 And of our Reigne the fourth year, By her Majesties Command Sic Subscribitur Marr.

Commission under her majesty’s royal hand and signet in favour of David [Melville] earl of Leven to be commander in chief of her majesty’s forces within this kingdom being presented by Sir Robert Forbes, clerk to her majesty’s privy council, the same was read and ordered to be recorded, and thereafter was delivered by [James Graham] the marquis of Montrose, lord president of privy council to the said earl, who received the same on his knee as use is. Follows the tenor of the said commission:

Anne by the grace of God queen of Great Britain, France, and Ireland defender of the faith etc to our right trusty and well beloved cousin and councillor David earl of Leven, greeting. We reposing a special trust and confidence in your loyalty, courage, and good conduct, do by these present nominate, constitute, and appoint you to be commander in chief off all and sundry our forces, horse, foot, and dragoons, which presently are, or hereafter shall be employed or raised for our service, whether standing forces, militia, or other forces whatsoever, within our ancient kingdom of Scotland. You are therefore carefully and diligently to discharge the duty of commander in chief of our forces by doing and performing all and all manner of things thereunto belonging. And we hereby require all officers and soldiers of all and singular our forces aforesaid to honour and obey you as their commander in chief, and you are likewise to observe and follow such orders and directions as you shall from time to time receive from us, or our privy council of that our kingdom, according to the rules and discipline of war.
