Warrand to the Magistrats of Edinburgh to Secure the horses and arms of papists and Suspect persons

His Grace her Majesties high Commissioner, and Lords of privie Councell takeing into ther consideration that of late severall persons who either are papists, or have not qualified themselves by takeing the oath of alleadgance, and subscribeing the Same with the assureance, In the terms of the acts of parliament, Have resorted to the Town of Edinburgh, and doe abyde therin, with horses, armes, and others ther attendants the tyme of the Sitting of the high Court of parliament; and that it is expedient that all such persons should either qualifie themselves to the Government, or otherwayes not be allowed to Stay within the said town of Edinburgh with ther saids horses and armes; Therfore her Majesties high Commissioner and Lords of privie Councell Doe heirby Grant warrant to and ordaine the Magistrats of Edinburgh fwrthwith to cause search the wholl Stables within the said town, Cannongate, and Suburbs therto belonging, for all horses and armes belonging to papists, persons suspect to be papists, or others who have not qualified, themselves to the Government in maner abovewryten; And to arreist and secure the saids armes and horses if the samen be above the value of ane hundreth merks Scots, wntill report therof be made to her Majesties high Commissioner, And appoynts the saids Magistrats to take exact nottice from tyme to tyme of all strangers who are or Shall happen to be lodged within the said burgh, And suburbs their names and designations, and give up full Lists therof to her Majesties high Commissioner, And ordains the saids Magistrats to continue to search, arreist and Secure in maner forsaid, And to give up the saids Lists from tyme to tyme to her Majesties high Commissioner as they will be answerable on their highest perrill.

Warrant to the magistrates of Edinburgh to secure the horses and arms of papists and suspect persons

His Grace [James Douglas, duke of Queensberry] her majesty’s high commissioner and lords of privy council taking into their consideration that of late several persons who either are papists, or have not qualified themselves by taking the oath of allegiance and subscribing the same with the assurance in the terms of the acts of parliament, have resorted to the town of Edinburgh, and do abide therein, with horses, arms, and others their attendants the time of the sitting of the high court of parliament, and that it is expedient that all such persons should either qualify themselves to the government, or otherwise not be allowed to stay within the said town of Edinburgh with their said horses and arms, therefore her majesty’s high commissioner and lords of privy council do hereby grant warrant to and ordain the magistrates of Edinburgh forthwith to cause search the whole stables within the said town, Canongate, and suburbs thereto belonging, for all horses and arms belonging to papists, persons suspect to be papists, or others who have not qualified themselves to the government in manner above written, and to arrest and secure the said arms and horses if the same be above the value of 100 merks Scots, until report thereof be made to her majesty’s high commissioner. And appoint the said magistrates to take exact notice from time to time of all strangers who are or shall happen to be lodged within the said burgh and suburbs, their names and designations, and give up full lists thereof to her majesty’s high commissioner. And ordain the said magistrates to continue to search, arrest, and secure in manner foresaid, and to give up the said lists from time to time to her majesty’s high commissioner, as they will be answerable on their highest peril.
