Warrant to the Magistrats of Edinburgh, Stirling Queensferrie and Leith anent papists and Suspect persons

Her Majesties high Commissioner and Lords of Privie Councell Considering that the Estates of parliament by ther proclamation of the date the Twentie Sevinth instant did Strictly prohibite and dischairge all unwarrantable and Seditious convocating the Leidges, or Inviteing and requyreing them to meet and conveine att any parliament place upon any certaine day or dayes in the Seditious and disorderly maner mentained in the said proclamation, And Recommended to the Privie Councell to enquyre after and prosecute Such as Shall be guilty of the Seditious and wnwarrantable practices aforsaid; And to take what other effectuall courses they Shall Judge proper for preventing and Suppressing therof, Therfor his Grace and the Saids Lords Doe heirby Appoynt and ordaine the Magistrats of Edinburgh to continue ther dilligence in Searching for and Secureing the horses and armes of papists, persons Suspect to be papists, And Such as are not qualified to the Government, And to enquyre diligently after Such Strangers as Shall come to this place, And in what maner they come, And to give Information therof to the Committie of Councell appoynted for that effect in the terms of the former order of Councell direct to them theranent And appoynts and Ordains the Magistrats of Stirling, Queensferrie and Leith to take particular notice of what persons comes South by ther respective ports or passages, And in what number and order they travell, And from tyme to tyme to give Information therof to the said Committie, As they will be answerable on ther highest perrill.

Warrant to the magistrates of Edinburgh, Stirling, Queensferry, and Leith concerning papists and suspect persons

[James Douglas, duke of Queensberry] her majesty’s high commissioner and lords of privy council, considering that the estates of parliament by their proclamation of the date 27 instant did strictly prohibit and discharge all unwarrantable and seditious gathering [of] the lieges, or inviting and requiring them to meet and convene at any parliament place upon any certain day or days in the seditious and disorderly manner mentioned in the said proclamation, and recommended to the privy council to enquire after and prosecute such as shall be guilty of the seditious and unwarrantable practices aforesaid, and to take what other effectual courses they shall judge proper for preventing and suppressing thereof. Therefor his grace and the said lords do hereby appoint and ordain the magistrates of Edinburgh to continue their diligence in searching for and securing the horses and arms of papists, persons suspect to be papists, and such as are not qualified to the government, and to enquire diligently after such strangers as shall come to this place, and in what manner they come, and to give information thereof to the committee of council appointed for that effect in the terms of the former order of council directed to them thereon. And appoint and ordain the magistrates of Stirling, Queensferry, and Leith to take particular notice of what persons come south by their respective ports or passages, and in what number and order they travel, and from time to time to give information thereof to the said committee, as they will be answerable on their highest peril.
