Act

Reprieve for Grissell Tullos

Concerning the petition given in and presented to the lords of her majesty’s privy council by Grissell Tullos, prisoner in the tolbooth of Edinburgh, showing that where the petitioner was justly sentenced to die this 28 February instant 1705 at the Grassmarket of Edinburgh, conform to a sentence pronounced against her by [Adam Cockburn] lord justice clerk and [the] lord commissioners of justiciary for her unnatural murdering her own child, which she acknowledged she was guilty of. And also that I do not deserve to live, but on the contrary deserve to be punished by man without any mercy. Neither do I desire to live but only some few days, that so she might get her peace made up with God through Jesus Christ, and may more and more loathe sin, as it is against God, and mourn for it, as it is wounding to the blessed mediator and grieving to the holy spirit, wherewith I desire to be sanctified, so as I may be saved from the second death. And therefore craving to the effect after mentioned, as the said petition bears. The lords of her majesty’s privy council having considered the within petition given in to them by Grissell Tullos, and the same being read in their presence, the said lords do hereby reprieve the petitioner, and delay the execution of the sentence of death pronounced against her by the lord justice clerk and commissioners of justiciary from 28 February instant to 13 March next to come inclusive. And appoint the magistrates of Edinburgh to see the said sentence of death pronounced against the petitioner as said is put in execution [on] 14 March peremptory without delay. And the said Lords declare they will hear no further application for any longer reprieve. Sic Subscribitur Tweeddale chancellor, Annandale P., Rothes p.s., Crawford, Buchan, Lauderdale, Loudoun, Roseberry, Ruglen, Balhaven.
