His Majesties Letter anent persons returning from France

The Letter underwryten from his Majestie To The Councell Being this day read was ordered to be recorded wherof the tenor folloues
Sic suprascribitur William Rex
Right trustie and Right well beloved Cousin and Councellor Right trustie and Entirely beloved Cousin and Councellor Right trustie and well beloved Cousins and Councellors Right trustie and well beloved Councellors And trustie and well beloved Councellors We Greet yow well Wheras we are Informed that Diverse of our subjects who stand forfeited or denunced Rebells for high Treason and other Dangerous and disaffected persons who have Contrary to our Laues gone into France during the tyme of the warr Have returned or are designing to returne to our Kingdome of Scotland without our permission for the same which (if not prevented) may prove to be of dangerous Consequence and may disturb the peace and quiet of our Kingdom Therfore we have thought fitt to signifie to yow That it is our royall will and pleasure That yow Issue furth a proclamation prohibiting all such persons to returne unless they first obtaine our pass and Libertie for the doing therof And appointing all Shirreffs of Shires baillies of regalities and other Magistrats uithin their respective Jurisdictions to sease and apprehend such as have returned or shall returne from France without Libertie as said is And that they Immediately acquaint yow theruith That such directions may be Given Concerning them as yow shall Judge requisite For doing wherof this shall be your warrand so we bid yow heartily Farewell Given att our Court at Kensingtoun the 30 day of November 1697 and of our reigne the nynth year By his Majesties Command sic subscribitur James Ogilvie.
