Proclamation for a Solemn national thanksgiving

Proclamation for observing the sixteenth day of December nixt to Come as a solemn day of Thanksgiving for the peace and his Majesties safe return to Britaine read and amended And afteruards votted and approven and appointed to be transcribed and proclaimed on Munday Folloues the proclamatione:
William by the Grace of God King of Great Britaine France and Ireland Defendar of the faith To […] Macers of our privy Councell Messengers at armes our shireffs in that part Conjunctly and Severally specially Constitut Greeting Forasmuchas the almightie Goodnes manifested touards us and our poeple In protecting our Royall persone and defeating the secret as well as open designes and attempts of our Enemies against our royall persone and Kingdoms during the Course of a dangerous and bloody warr The Incomparable blessing of ane honourable peace to all our Dominions and allies Joyned uith us in defence of the same Cause And Likeuise that God hath been pleased to Returne us in safety to these our dominions To the great satisfaction and Joy of all our Good subjects It is our duety and theirs by a day sett apart for that effect to pay our solemn acknouledgements and return praise and glory to God who hes been to us a mightie delyverer And for which also The Ministers mett togither at Edinburgh in the Commission of the Late Generall Assembly of this our antient Kingdome Have made address to the Lords of our privie Councell That a solemn day of publick thanksgiving may be sett apairt to be religiously observed throughout this our antient Kingdome Therfore we with advyce of the Lords of our privie Councell Doe appoint and Command that the sixteen day of December nixt to Come be religiously observed as a solemn day of publick thanksgiving by all persons uithin this kingdome For returning most humble and hearty thanks to the divyne providence for the signall blessings and delyverance already bestoued upon us and our poeple and to Implore the Continuance therof wherby our subjects under us may not only Enjoy the fruits and Comforts of a happy and lasting peace But we and they may be enriched with all the blessings of the Gospell And that God may establish that which he hath wrought for us which day of thanksgiving for the Causes and ends forsaid we doe heirby peremptorly require and Enjoyne to be observed with all religious practises suitable to such ane occasion by all our good subjects Ministers and others as they will be ansuerable at their highest perrill Our Will is herefore and we Charge yow strictly and Command That Incontinent these our Letters seen ye pass to the mercat Cross of Edinburgh and the remanent mercat Crosses of the head burghs of the severall shires and steuartries within this Kingdome And In our name and authority make publication of the premisses that none may pretend ignorance And we ordaine our sollicitor to dispatch Coppies hereof to the Shirreffs of the severall Shires and steuarts of the steuartries or their deputs or Clerks to be by them published at the mercat Crosses of the head burghs upon recept therof and Immediately sent to the severall Ministers To the effect they may read and Intimat the same from their pulpits upon the Sunday before the said sixteenth day of December nixt And ordaines these presents to be printed and published In manner forsaid Given under our signet at Edinburgh the tuenty day of November and of our regne the nynth year 1697 sic subscribitur.
