Letter from The Queen To the Councill anent preist and trafecquing papists etc

Letter from the Queens Majestie to the Councill anent preists Trafecquing papists and the insults of the desenters in this Church presented By the Lord Ross Read and ordered to be Recorded and printed And the samen togither with some Informationes and Letters from the presbitry’s of Ross and Sutherland, and Letters from severall heretors there, about a Ryott at the Church of Dingwall Against the Sherriff of Ross proceedour therin Remitted to the Committee formally appointed anent the preists and grivances by the Episcopall Clergie to consider the same and Report wherof the tennor followes

Right trusty and right well beloved Cousin and Councellor, Right trusty and Enteirly beloved Cousins and Councellors, Right trusty and weell beloved Cousins and Councillors, Right trusty and weell beloved Councellors And trusty and weell beloved Councellors Wee greet yow well Wheras There was ane humble address presented to us from the General Assembly of the Church in that our antient Kingdome Representing the grouth of popery and the numbers of preists and Jesuits with severall disorders and Illegall attempts of the Dissenting Clergy and the Encrease of vice and Immorality (wherof a speciall condescendance was offered to yow) And praying our Royall assistance for putting the Laws Relating to these Articles to vigorous Execution It is our pleasure and wee doe requyre yow to give all just Encurragment to the Ministers and Government of the Church Established by Law And that yow give your outmost applicatione and Endevours to Discourage and prevent the grouth of popery and for seasing and securing preists and Jesuits and that yow doe not suffer any Illegall attempts or Encroachments to be made by the discenting Clergie upon the present Constitution And that yow Endevour to promote vertue and piety and Restrain vice and Immorality Every where through this Kingdome in the wayes yow see most Expedient and aggreeable to our Laws And soe not doubting your cair herein Wee bid yow heartily farewell Given Att our Court Att St James’s The Thrid day of March 1703/4 And of our Rigne the second year By Her Majesties Command Sic Subscribitur Queensberry.
