Letter from the secretary’s and others to the Commission of the General Assembly of the kings great indisposition
Letter from the Duke of Queensberry and Argyle, Earles of Seafeild, Hyndfoord and Marr. To the Earle of Marchmont Commissioner to be by him Communicat to the privy Councill Intimating his Majesties ill State of health being Read; And ordered to be Recorded; And therupon Recommended to his Grace to make returne therto. Off the which Letter the Tenor followes.
Kensingtoun March 7th at 11th a Cloak at Night 1701/2
My Lord,
Wee think it our duty to accquaint your Lordship and the Lords of his Majesties privy Councill With the Dangerous Circumstances of his Majesties health; your Lordship has heard formerly That he gott a fall from his horss when he was Last a hunting, and did then break his Collar-bone; He was almost recovered of this; But on Wednesday last he was taken with a severe fitt of ane Ague, But his Majesties phisitians and all others that hade access to him; Did give us great hopes of his recovery, He has had Severall fitts of the Ague since that time and is now become very weak and his phisitians have now given their oppinion to the Lords of privy Councill here and to us, That his life is in great danger; And Wee Must say That our fears are greater then our hopes; But his Majesties precious Life being of Such Consequence to us wee doe Sinceirly pray and wish that God may preserve and Recover him, However wee thought it necessary to acquaint your Lordship that yow may give such directiones as yow shall think proper for the peace and quiet of the kingdome; And wee think if the two Regiments Commanded by Coll Row and Coll Fergusone are not yet as yet saill’d That they may before some time Stopt, and it may also be proper That Brigadeer Maitland who Commands the Garison of Fort William be acquainted with his Majesties dangerous Circumstances That he may be on his Gaurd and be the More Capable to provyde for the Securitie of his Garison And wee desire that your Lordship will be pleased to Communicat this to the Lords of his Majesties privy Councill Who will best know what is to be done in this extraordinary Juncture; And Wee Resolve from time to time to acquaint your Lordship with what occures Wee are My Lord, your Lordships most faithfull and humble servants, Sic Subscribitur2 Queensberie, Argyll Seafeild Hyndfoord Mar. Directed Thus; To his Grace the Earle of Marchmount his Majesties Commissioner to the Generall Assembly. Edinburgh.
