Proclamation
Proclamation anent deserters and their resetters
Proclamation against Deserters and resetters being Read in Councill the Samen was voted approven and Signed and appointed to be printed published and recorded wherof the tenor followes.
William by the Grace of God King of Great Brittain France and Ireland defender of the faith to […] Macers of our privy Councill Messengers at armes our Shirriffs in that part Conjunctllie and Severallie Specially Constitute Greeting Forasmuchas Wee have ordered severall Regiments of our Standing forces to march and be transported furth of this kingdome as necessary for our service in this present juncture Upon which occasion Some may presume to desert Therfore Wee with advice if our privy Councill Have thought fitt to discharge And hereby Discharges all persones whatsomever to resett intertaine or Conceall any deserters who Shall presume to desert either from the said regiments or any others of our Standing forces upon any pretext whatsomever under the paine of being held and repute Airt and part with these deserters and Lyable in what cost and damnadge the officers of our forces may incurr or Sutaine theirby Declareing that Such Shall be held as resetters of deseters, who shall receive and intertaine in their house or Service any at present, or when within these two moneths have been actually serving in our Standing forces without a due Certificat from their Collonell on Livt Collonell And Furder Wee with advice forsaid Doe hereby Certifie all such deserters that they shall be Strictly and Severly punished for their said desertion2 Indemnifieing Nevertheless all deserters who Shall returne to their respective Collonells betwixt and the last day of February Current. Conforme to our former proclamation emitted for that effect And Lastly Wee hereby Renew and reveiw all former proclamationes made by Us or our privy Councill for the securitie of our Leidges against undue pressing of persones to be Souldiers or to be transported furth of the kingdome contrair to the Lawes and rules Sett down theranent Our Will is Heirfore and wee Charge yow Strictly and Command That incontinent these our Letters seen yee pass to the Marcat Cross of Edinburgh; And to the marcat crosses of the remanent head burghs of the Severall Shyres and Stewartries within this kingdome; And therat in our name and authoritie by oppen proclamation make publication of the premisses That non pretend Ignorance And Ordaines these presents to be printed Given under our Signet at Edinburgh the tenth day of February and of our reigne the 13th year 1702 Sic Subscribitur.
