Sic supra scribitur William Rex
Right trusty and right welbeloved Cousin and Councellor, Right Trusty and Entirely beloved Cousin and Councellor, Right trusty and right welbeloved, Cousins and Councellors, Right trusty and welbeloved Cousins and Councellors, Right trusty and welbeloved Councellors, And Trusty and welbeloved Councellors. Wee greet yow well, We have been Informed of your proceedings in Reference to the papists taken att a meeting lately held in the Duke of Gordons Lodging, As also of the orders yow have given for prosecuting the said Duke for some Expressiones he hes hade before yow, In which we think he hes been very much wanting in that Respect which is due to our Government, And To the authority with which yow are Invested as well as to truth It Self, Since those of that perswasion must be Convinced they have mett with nothing from us but the utmost Lenity We have Thought fitt to Signifie to yow, That we are fully satisfied with what yow have acted, and with the Zeal yow have testified on this occasion For vindicating the honour of our Government and Secureing the publick quiet of the nation, Wee have Ever been averse from prosecuting any, on account of their Religion, So long as in the Exercise thereof They have kept within the due Bounds of moderation But when in contempt of our lenity they proceed to such ane open and bare faced violation of the laws, as tends Evidently To the disturbance of the publick peace, yow may be assured, we will never Countenance nor protect them, But Suffer the law and Justice to have its due course. So we bid yow heartily farewell, Given att our Court at Loo, The i4th day of July i699. And of our Reign the iith year. By his Majesties Command. Sic subscribitur Robert Pringle.
