Procedure
Commission To Livetenant Colonell Erskine to be governour of Dumbarton Castle
Gift or Commission under his Majesties Royall hand In favours of Livetennant Colonell John Erskine nominating and appointing him to be governour of his Majesties Castle of Dumbarton and Captain of the Company in Garrison their, Read and ordered to be Recorded. And the said Livetennent Collonell being called in to the Councill, and having sworn and signed the oath of alledgance and signed the Assurance and Associatione appointed to his Majestie by acts of parliament. The Lord high Chancellour did ministrate to him the oath de fideli And delivered to the said Livetennent Collonell the above Gift or Commission, which he Receaved upon his Knee as use is. Follows the Tenor of the said Commission
Sic Supra Scribitur William Rex
William By the grace of God King of Scotland England France and Ireland defender of the faith etc To our Trusty and welbeloved Livetennent Collonell John Erskine. Greeting. Wee Reposeing special Trust and Confidence in your Loyalty courage and conduct. Have nominated Constituted and appointed, And doe by these presents nominate Constitute and ordain yow to be Governour of our Castle of Dumbarton As also to be Captain of the Company in Garrison therin giveing hereby unto yow full power and authority To Command our said Castle and to arme train and Exercise lead and Conduct our said Company for our service in all things belonging to the Trust and command aforsaid and to Enjoy all privileges and Emoluments formerly belonging to the Governours of our said Castle, And wee doe heirby Require all the officers and souldiers of our said Company To obey yow in all Things for our service as their Governour and Captain, And your self Likeways Exactly to observe and follow all such orders directions and Commands as yow shall from tyme to tyme Receave from us or our privy Councill of that our Kingdom of Scotland, In pursuance of the speciall Trust which wee heirby Repose in yow. Given under our Royall hand and signet at our court at Kensington The Thirty first day of January 1698/9 and of our Reign the Tenth year. By his majesties Command sic subscribitur Seafeild.
