Proclamation
Proclamation anent seminary preists Jesuits and traficking papists
The Proclamation underwritten Being read was votted approven and Signed wherof the Tenor follows
William by the grace of God King of great Brittan France and Ireland Defender of the faith To our Lovites […] Macers of our privy Councill messengers att armes our Sheriffs in that part Conjunctlie and Severallie Specialy Constitute Greeting: Forasmuch as the many good and Laudable Laws made against Seminary preists Jesuits and Trafficquing papists adversaries to the true Religion profest within this Realm and particularly the acts following viz: Parliament 7th King James 6th Caput 105. That no subjects nor Strangers adversaries to the said true Religion remain within this Realm unless they obey the Law anent their giving Confession of Faith, Act James 6th Parliament 11th Caput 24, That any seminary preist when found within this Realm, Incurr the pain of Death and Escheat of moveables and that the Resetters or Suppliers of such By the space of Three days and Three nights lyne their Liferents. Act James 6th Parliament 12th Caput 120: That the resetting of Jesuits, Seminary preists, and Trafficking papists against the King and the present Religion Infer the crime and pain of Treason both against the persons Resett and their Resetters Act James Parliament 16th Caput 18, That all Jesuits seminarie priests Excommunicat and traficking papists common enemies to all Christian Government be apprehended and Committed be magistrats, until they be put out of the Kingdom or punished conform to the acts of parliament and that none resett them under the pains therein Exprest. Act Charles 2nd Parliament 1 Session 1st Caput 8th, That all Jesuits preists and trafficking papists Remove furth out of the Kingdom under the pain of Death and act Charles 2nd parliament Caput 6th, Requiring all Judges and officers to putt the Laws against popery and papists to full and vigorous execution. Yett nevertheless Severall popish preists Jesuits and Traficking papists presume to resort within and Infest this Kingdom, Therefore, wee with advice of the Lords of our privy Councill Have thought fitt To Command and heirby Strictly command all sheriffs, Lords of Regality, Stewarts and Bailies and all their Deputs and all magistrats of Burghs, Justices of peace and all other officers of the Law whatsoever To cause search for seek and apprehend within their Respective Bounds all Jesuits preists and Traficking papists that shall be found within the same; and that they immediatly cause transport them when apprehended under sure Guard from sherriff to sherriff as use is To the Tolbooth of Edinburgh where the magistrats of Edinburgh and keepers of the said Tolbooth are to Receave and detain them prisoners untill they be punished or Banished conform to the said act as our privy Council shall appoint. And furder we with advice forsaid Command and Charge the said sheriffs magistrats and other officers of the Law To take up the names of all Resetters of preists Jesuits and traficking papists within their Bounds with their designationes and the names of such Witnesses as can give Evidence against them, As also That they take up the names and Designations of all popish pedagogues, Schoolmasters and mistresses within their Bounds and Transmitt the same to the Clerk of our privy Councill with all diligence. Certifieing the saids Sheriffs magistrats and other officers of the Law That if they failzie in the premises and to give a Return of their diligence to the clerk of our privy Councill Betwixt and the first day of June next to Come they shall be Summoned to appear and severely punished according to their Demerit. Our Will is Heirfore And wee charge yow strictly and command That Incontinent these our Letters seen ye pass to the mercat Cross of Edinburgh and to the Remanent mercat Crosses of the severall head Burghs within this Kingdom And There in our name and authority by open proclamation make publication heirof, that none pretend Ignorance, And ordains these presents to be printed, Given under our Signet at Edinburgh the fourth day of March and of our Reign the Nynth Year 1689.
