Att Edinburgh the Fourth day of Feburary One Thousand seven hundred and one years

Act Mr James Gregory anent ane Machin

Anent the petition given in to the Lords of his Majesties privy Councill be Mr James Gregory proffessor of Mathamaticks in the Colledge of Edinburgh Shewing That wher the petitioner haveing invented a machin for raiseing of Watter in a continued pipe, meerly by lifting without any suction or forceing; which are the only wayes formerly practised and lyable to a great many inconveniencies; By which Marchin invented by the petitioner watter might be raised to any height in a greatter quantitie and in Less space of time by the same force and might be sett up and mantained for the draining of Coall pitts, or mines under ground with Less charges then any formerly invented, And Therfore humbly Supplicating the saids Lords to the effect eftermentioned His Majesties high Commissioner and the Lords of his Majesties privy Councill Having Considered the above petition given in to them by the above Mr James Gregory They hereby prohibit and Discharge any persone whatsomever to sett up and use the above Machin invented by the petitioner or any Machin not mattereally different therfrom bot made in Immitatione therof with some Immatteriall variatione of no greater effect or use bot industreously Contrived to elleid the effect of the petitioners act and that for the space of Threttie one years nixt and Immediatly following the date hereof under the penaltie of Fyve hundred merks toties quoties for the ilk Machin so to be made or sett up to be payed to the petitioner his heirs or assigneyes by and attour the Confiscating the saids machines to his use.
