Remitt to the Chancelor to Speak with the Comander in Cheiff anent the reduction of the forces

Letter from the king to the Councill anent the two Companies in the Southern and Northern districts Read and ordered to be recorded wherof the tenor followes
Sic Supra Scribatur William Rex
Right trustie and right well beloved Cousin and Councillor Right trustie and intirely beloved Cousin and Councillor Right trustie and well beloved Cousins and Councillors Right trustie and well beloved Councillors And Trustie and well beloved Councillors; Wee greet yow weell Wheras it is represented to us that the thefts and depredations from the Highlands on the adjacent Countreys have been very frequent And that for repressing and preventing the same in time comeing It is necessary their Should be two Companies of foot Setled in the Southern and Northern districts of the highlands under Command of persones weell qualified for such a trust. And wee being willing to concurr in any thing that may tend to the preservation of the peace and queit of our good Subjects Wee have therfore thought fitt to grant Commissions to Captain Alexander Campbell of Collonell Fergusones regiment And Captain William Grant of Collonell Rowes Regiments whom yow are to order with all dilligence to Compleat their Companies to the number of Sixtie Sentinels besides Commissioned and non Commissioned officers Conforme to our establishment, And wee hereby Remitt to yow to give orders to the saids two Captains to March with their Companies viz Captain Campbell to the southern district and Captain Grant to the Northern district of the Highlands, And that ther they may take such posts as shall be Judged most proper for inableing them to prevent and repress the Thefts and other disorders usually Committed And for apprehending guilty persones; And that they may be assistant to our Courts of Justice And the Commission of Justiciary now established and in generall to give them such orders as from time to time yow shall find necessary for the ends aforesaid And wee hereby Declare That they and ther Companies are to act in pursuance of your instructions And to obey such Commands as they shall receive from yow on the Commander in Cheif of our forces ther for the time; And they are to remain in their respective posts untill removed by Our order or yours And so wee bid yow heartily farewell Given at our Court at Kensingtoune the 24th day of June 170i And of our Reigne the 13th year.
