Letter from The Lord Chancelor To the Lord secretary Anent Leivt Broune
Right Honourable
The Councell Being Informed That one Leivtennant George Broune in the royall regiment Commanded by Lord George Hamilton had Committed severall abuses in the Countrey By seizing upon men uithout any warrand appointed him to be apprehended and examined before a Committie of their Number wher he was found to have taken unwarrantablie severall persons after his oune Complement was full and sold these men for Considerable money to such as were obleidged to furnish men to the new Levies Therby both Incouraging a practise prejudiciall to the Countrey and Contrary to Law And obstructing their Majesties service by calling for Guides in the night from persons well affected to the government And then Carrying them away violently and disposing of them for money And Because this Leivtenant being ane officer in their Majesties service in Flanders was not subject to the tryall of a Councell of warr heir Therfore the Lords of Councill thought fitt to Continow him in prisone heir untill their Majesties pleasure were knouen And appointed this to be signified to you That with your Conveniency his Majesties Commands heirin may be returned which shall receave all deutifull obedience from My Lord your Lordships humble servant sic subscribitur Tueeddall cancelar Directed on the back thus For the right honourable The Master of Stair principall secretary of state for the Kingdome of Scotland
