Letter from the King anent recruits of Dragoons
The following letter being read in Councill was ordered to be recorded in the Councill books whereof the tenor followeth sic suprascribitur William Rex Right trusty and right wel beloved Cousin and Councellor Right trusty and intirely beloved Cousin and councellor Right trusty and right well beloved Cousins and Councillors Right trusty and well beloved Cousins and Councillors Right trusty and right welbeloved Councellors and trusty and welbeloved Councillors We greet yow well wheras our two Regiments of scots dragoons in Flanders stand in need of recruits and that it is for the good of those regiment to have them recruited with men that are alreadie dragoons and that ther will be noe difficulty to find recruits for the two regiments of that our Kingdome We have thought fitt that a draught be made out of our said two regiments of dragoons Consisting of one Hundred men without horses or mouting, of which fiftie to be taken out of my Lord Jedburghs Regiment are to be delyvered to major Generall Livingstounes officers and the other fifty to be drawen out of my Lord Carmichaells Regiment are to be delyvered to Collonell Cunynghames officers and we doe recommend to your Care to give such ordors to my Lord Jedburgh and my Lord Carmichaell as are necessary for haveing these draughts made of good and sufficient men and further it is our pleasure That the said Regiments of Jedburgh and Carmichaell have sex weeks allowed them for recruiting the vaccancys that the said draught will make which sex weeks are to begin to 2 run from the tyme of shipping the recruits for Flanders before which tyme we doe not allow any of our forces in Scotland to be recruited Thus not doubting of your Care and dilligence in this matter we bid you heartilie farewell Given at our Court at Kensington the 17 day of December 1694 and of our reigne the 6th year By his majesties Command sic subscribitur J Johnstoune
