Letter from the Councell to the King Anent persones Imprisoned Confyned for refusing the oaths

The letter underwryten direct from the Lords of privy Councell to the Kings Majestie being this day redd in Councell was approven and signed and ordored the same to be recorded off which the tenor folloues
May It please your sacred Majestie
It was judged necessary the last summer that ther should be Called Before us not only such as wee had upon just suspicione formerly putt under bond and Cautione But also some others from severall parts of the kingdome for securitie of the peace therof And to requyre them to suear the oath of alleadgance and subscribe the Assurance Conforme to the Act of parliament made for that effect But they Compearing and being requyred For the Greater part refuised wherby according to the Act of parliament and their demerite They were sentenced some to prisone others to Confynment and the rest were fyned in a yeers valued rent and ordored to find Cautione to pay their fynes Ther was also a few whose appearance uas thought doubtfull that were summarly apprehended and upon their refuisall Committed Since which tyme all of them have Continoued in that state untill of Late That some have upon the account of their health and other reasones applyed to us for releiff But albeit we shewed such measure of Indulgence to a few Imprisoned as we thought their caises deserved yet wee have keeped them under Cautione to reenter betuixt and a short day And in the mean tyme we Conceave ourselves obleidged to Lay the Conditione of these Imprisoned and Confyned before your Majestie That after Having done our deuty in passing sentence we may receave such directiones in the matter as to the Continowance of their Imprisonments and Confynments as your Majestie thinks fitt to Give And what your Majestie shall ordor in this and all other things shall be ever punctually obeyed By May It please your Majestie your Majesties most Loyall most faithfull and most obedient subjects and servants sic subscribitur Tueeddall cancel: Southerland Linlithgow Leven Annandall Forfar Tarbat Raith Ross Polluarth William Master of Forbess James Steuart John Lauder W Anstruther
