Act The Toune of Kirkcaldie

Anent the petition given in to the Lords of his Majesties privie Councill By the magistrats Toune Councill and remanent Inhabitants of the burgh of Kirkcaldie Sheuing That wher the petitioners being situat upon the Coast syde are yearly exposed to the accommodating of such recruits (in their prison) as are to be sent to Flanders and are obleidged to furnish quarters to their guairds As also before but especiallie since the Late happy revolutione there Burgh being placed near the road uay to the north of Scotland Hath suffered exceeding much by furnishing transient quarters to most of the regiments and troops that pass to and from the north for suppressing the rebells in the Highlands But above all The petitioners have been extreamly burdened with Constant and Locall quarterings these many years bypast scarce any year Interveening wherin they did not furnish quarters to a whole regiment of foot in the summer tyme at Leist And to a troop of horse or dragoons in the winter And sustained great Loss by affoording free quarters to the souldiers some of these years besyds many other damnages and prejudices by the souldiers From which hardly at any tyme they Can be restrained And since ther are many other places in the kingdome more Convenient for quartering souldiers which hath hitherto bein rarely putt to that trouble And since many of the petitioners are through these losses and other Great damnages which they have receaved from the french privateers at sea reduced to Great straits and difficulties And since their Lordships hath been graciously pleased to bestow the Lyke favour upon the toune of Couper in Fife who Could not pretend to be in such Circumstances that so much pleads their Lordships Commiseration And therfore Humblie Craving their Lordships to discharge any further Locall quartering of souldiers upon the petitioners That they may have some Litle respite from that Great burden under which they have Groaned And they shall cheerfullie affoord transient quarters and doe every other duety for advancing his Majesties government which they are or can be bound aither as Good christians or Loyall subjects as the said petition bears The saids Lords of his Majesties privie Councill Having Considered this petition given in to them By the magistrats toune Counsell and Inhabitants of Kirkcaldie They in respect of the specialities Contained in the petition Doe heirby Discharge any Locall quartering of souldiers upon the petitioners for the future untill further order from their Lordships shall be Given for that effect
