Letter: to the Council
Kings Letter to the Councill for putting the Kingdome in a posture of defence
The following Letter from the King to the Councill being read was ordered to be recorded followeth the tenor of the Letter sic suprascribitur William Rex Right trusty and right wel beloved Cousin and Councillor Right trusty and intirely beloved Cousin and Councillor Right trusty and right2 welbeloved Cousins and Councillors Right trusty and welbeloved Councillors and trusty and welbeloved Councillors We greet you well we haveing received furder informatione That there is ane invasione designed from France upon our ancient kingdome of Scotland we have therfore thought fitt againe to requyre you with all dilligence to put the said Kingdome in a posture of defence That persons of undoubted Loyallity and of good affectione to our Government be appoynted Commanders of the respective Shyres and usuall districks and in all or either of these you are impoured either to call out the Heretors and fencible men or militia at such tymes and in such maner as you shall think fitt and the foresaid Commanders are to receive their orders from tyme to tyme from you or our Commander in Cheiff The Garisons particularlie these of the Castles of Edinburgh and Stirling and to be provyded with all necessary provisions for three moneths and sufficient stores and magazins are to be put in such places as shall be thought most convenient for the use of our forces The standing regiments need to be recruited and we doubt not but you will take the most effectuall methods for doeing thereof speedilie In case of the invasione we are fully resolved to send from this Kingdome and from Flanders a competent number of forces for your assistance and we are confident That ye will all unanimously concurr in what is necessary for the Good of our service and the quiet and peace of the Kingdome upon this occasione and so we bid you heartily farewell Given at our court at Kensington the 2d day of March 1695/6 and of our Reigne the 7th year By his Majesties Command sic subscribitur James Ogilvie
