Proclamation

Proclamation Anent passes and the appearing of ships upon the Coast

The proclamation underwryten Being this day read was votted approven and signed wherof the tenor folloues
William By the Grace of God King of Great Brittain France and Ireland Defender of the faith To […] Macers of our privy Councill messengers at arms our shireffs in that part Conjunctly and Severally specially Constitut Greeting Forasmuch as ther being ane Invasion designed from France We for the better securing of this our ancient Kingdome against the said Invasion Doe Command and require all our Living Subjects Especiallie our Magistrats and Justices of peace Collectors surveyors and waiters att our severall Seaports And upon the borders to Stopp and seize all persons coming into this Kingdome who have not sufficient passes under one of the secretaries of state for aither of the Kingdoms of Scotland or England or under the Leiutennant or Justices of Ireland or any one of their hands And all persons going from this Kingdome that have not passes from one of our privie Councill or the nixt magistrat who is hereby ordered to Give account therof to Some of our privie Councill Especiallie of these persons who come by sea And we doe Command and require all our Living subjects to take speciall nottice of any meetings that shall be keeped by any persons Disaffected to our Government And that they discover the samen tymously to some of our privie Councill or the next magistrat of the place That the saids persons may be secured and proceeded against as persons designing to disturb the quiet and peace of our Government And furder appointes and ordaines the Magistrats of all the tounes in the sea coasts of this Kingdome upon the first sight of any Number of Shipps approaching our Coasts or advyces by sea That they advertise our privie Councill And the nixt Commanding officer of the same by sending expresses Our Will is heirfore And we Charge yow Strictly and Command That Incontinent these our Letters seen ye pass to the Mercat Cross of Edinburgh and to the mercat Crosses of the remanent head burghs of the severall shires and steuartries within this Kingdom And ther In our name and authority by open proclamation make Intimations of the premisses That none pretend ignorance And ordains these presents to be printed and published In manner forsaid Given under our signet at Edinburgh the Eleventh day of December Jaj vic nyntie six years and of our reign the Eight year Sic Subscribitur.
