Proclamation appointing heretors to be In readiness

The follouing proclamation Being read was votted approven and signed whereof the tenor is afterinsert
William By the Grace of God King of Great Brittain France and Ireland Defender of the faith To […] Macers of our privy Counsell pursevants, Messengers at arms our shireffs in that part Conjunctly and Severally specially Constitut Greeting Forasmuch as this our ancient Kingdome is at present threatned with ane Invasione from abroad of French and Foreign papists and other Enemies of design to make this Nation the seat of a bloody warr For preventing wherof And in order to putt this Kingdome in a posture of defence We have thought fitt att this tyme that the heretors of the Shires after mentioned should be In readines to oppose the said Invasione and suppress any Intestine Insurrection that may happen Therfore with advyce of the Lords of our privie Councill Doe command and Require all the hertors wadsetters Liferenters of whatsoever quality within the shires of Edinburgh Haddingtoun Berwick Roxburgh Selkirk Peebles Drumfreis Dumbartoun Bute Linlithgow Stirling Clackmannan Fife and Kinross And Shires of Wigtoun and Steuartry of Kirkcudbright Air Lanerk Argyll and Renfrew and Perth Shires To putt themselves presently in readiness with their best horses and arms and provisions necessary according to their respective qualities and Estates To meet and Conveen upon Fourtie Eight hours advertisement And attend our host and standard as they shall be Called by order from our privie Councill For resisting the said Invasion and Insurrection If the same shall happen under such Commanders and officers and at such tymes and places as shall be appointed by our privie Councill And ther to receave such farder orders as shall be Given by us on these Commissionat by us And we doe heirby Certifie all heirin Concerned who shall not attend such rendivouzes to be appointed And obey these presents In manner above ordained That they shall be punished as wilfull absenters from our hoste and standard with all rigor Our Will is heirfore And we Charge yow Strictly and Command that Incontinent these our Letters seen ye pass to the Mercat Cross of Edinburgh and mercat Crosses of the remanent headburghs of the severall shires and steuartries within this Kingdom abovementioned And ther in our name and authority make publication of the premysses that none pretend ignorance And ordains these presents to be printed Given under our signet att Edinburgh the Eleventh day of December and of our reigne the Eight year 1696 Sic subscribitur.
