Proclamation

Proclamatione Indemnifieing deserters who shall returne betwixt and the first of January next to Come

The proclamation after insert being read was votted approven and signed and ordered to be recorded wherof the tenor followes William By the Grace of God King of Great Britaine France and Ireland Defender of the faith To […] Macers of our privie Counsell Messengers at arms our shirreffs in that part conjunctly and severally speciallie Constitut Greeting Forasmuchas we are Informed that severall souldiers belonging to our forces within this our ancient Kingdome have deserted And we Being Desyrous raither to reclaime Transgressors by Clemency then to punish them with the outmost severity Therfore We with advice of the Lords of our privie Councill have thought fitt to Requyre And doe heirby require all souldiers that have deserted to Returne to their Colours and to our service Betwixt and the first day of January next to Come promising to Indemnifie Lykeas we doe heirby fullie Indemnifie for their by past deserting all that shall return In manner forsaid But on the other hand Certifying such as shall not return betwixt and the day forsaid That both they and their Resetters shall be prosecute with the outmost severity Conform to the Laus and proclamations Emitted against them And farder we doe heirby Impouer and require all officers whatsomever belonging to our forces aither at home or abroad to seize and apprehend after the day forsaid all such deserters as shall not accept of this our Gracious offer To the effect they may be Condignly punished as said is. Our Will is heirfore And we Charge yow strictly and Command That In continent these our Letters seen ye pass to the mercat Cross of Edinburgh and to the mercat Crosses of the remanent head burghs of the Severall shires and steuardries within this Kingdome And ther in our name and authority by open proclamation make Intimation heirof And ordains these presents to be printed Given under our Signet at Edinburgh the Tuelfth day of November and of our reign the Eight year 1696 Sic subscribitur.
