Letter: from the Council
Letter Lord Chancellor to the Laird Blackwood anent fencible men in the west
It being recomended to the Lord Chancellor to wryt a letter to the Laird of Blackwood for ceitting the fencible men in the west his Lordship wrot the following Letter whereof the tenor follow’s Sir the frequent proofs the fencible men in the western shyres have given of their zeall and good affection to his majesties persone and Government and the readiness they have showen to expose themselves in defence of the religion and Liberties of their Countrey when in danger to be invaded by enimies from abroad or evill disposed persones at home hath induced the Government to give them all incouragement possible and to allow them to meet randivouze and exercise themselves under the Command of such officers as they themselves had choisen And his Majestie haveing by repeated advertisments informed the privy Councill of ane invasione by Cruell and bloodie papists designed from France To ruine all that is dear to the good and Loyall subjects of this Kingdom It is needfull That a more then extraordinary forewardness and resolutione should be taken to oppose and defeat that barbarous designe by all his Majesties Loveing Subjects wherefore seeing we have given all incouragement upon the part of the government that can be desyred and that your acquaintance with and interest among the weldisposed people of these shyres Gives you ane occasione to doe 2 his Majestie and your Countrey service By exciting them to meet frequently and to dispose them readilie to answere and obey such Commands as shall be sent them at any tyme to march against the Enemie and suppress the intended invasione if it shall happen It is expected at this tyme of imminent danger you will not be wanting to use your outmost endeavours herein and for that end you may Let them know the assureance given them in the Late proclamatione That however they be imployed at this tyme They shall noe wayes upon that account be reckoned as Listed Souldiers or to be troubled thereupon hereafter shall be punctually observed to them as also in case they shall be called to march against the Enemie out of their owne Shyres Exact care shall be taken That all necessary provisions shall be duely and sufficiently made and prepared for them at the Expence of the Government and which by warrand and in name of the Councill is signified to you by Sir your Humble servant sic subscribitur Tweeddale Cancel Ipd Edinburgh 6th March 1696 Directed thus For the Laird of Blackwood
