Kings Letter anent Invasions

The following Letter direct from his majestie to the Privie Councill being read was ordered to be recorded whereof the tenor follows sic suprascribitur William Rex Right trusty and right well beloved Cousin and Councillor Right trusty and intirely beloved Cousin and councillor Right trusty and right welbeloved Cousins and Councillors Right trusty and welbeloved Councillors and Trusty and welbeloved Councillors we greet you well The mercifull providence of God to us and our Kingdoms hath discovered a most wicked and Horrid Conspiracie to assasinat our Royall persone which was designed to have been acted before ane Invasione which was intended from France, for the ruineing of our Religione and all that is dear to our good subjects But God haveing been pleased to frustrate their first designe we trust in him he will also disappoynt their effectuating of the second On this occasion we think it necessary and it is our pleasure That you put our Kingdome of Scotland in a posture of defence either by calling out of the Heretors and fencible men or by raiseing of the militia in such manner as you shall find necessary and by putting them under the Command of those that are best affected to our Government who are to receive their ordors from you and the Commander in Cheiff of our Forces Our standing Regiments being much wakned by the draughts that Have been made by our ordor you are to take the most effectuall methods for recruiting them speedilie, Our forts and Garrisons are also to be carefully notticed and to be provyded with what is necessary particularly that of Fort William we have ordered those of our privie Councill that are here immediatly To repaire to Scotland and we requyre you to requyre those who are of the Councill in that Kingdome to2 attend your meetings except those whom you shall Judge most necessarly be imployed in our service in the Countrey We recomend to you as we have alreadie done to those of our Councill who are Here to lay asyde divisions and Animosities and unamimously to concurr in what concerns the peace and security of our Government It is fitt especially at this Juncture That ye take the most effectuall methods for preventing the designs of those who are knowen to be disaffected and that3 ye doe put the Laws to executione against such who doe justly bring themselves under their Censure and so we bid you heartily farewell Given at our Court at Kensington the 25th day of February 1695/6 and of our Reigne the 7th year By his Majesties Command sic subscribitur J Murray
