The letter after insert from his Majestie to the privie Councell Being read was ordered to be recorded wherof the tenor folloues
Sic Suprascribitur William Rex:
Right Trustie and Right well Beloved Councelor Right Trustie and Entirely Beloved Cousin and Councelor Right Trustie and Right Well Beloved Cousins and Councelors Right trustie and well Beloved Councelors And trustie and well beloved Councelors We Greet yow well Although at present ther be noe Certaine account of any formed design of Invading that our Kingdome yet for preventing of all dangers that may occurr either by one Invasion or ane Intestine Commotion We have thought fitt to Signifie to yow That it is our Royall will and pleasure that all necessary orders be Given to putting the same in a posture of defence In order to this we doubt not but the Commissioners of our Thesaurie will take Care that the subsistance money Be duely and tymously payed to our standing forces The Garrisons are out of Repair And we have signified our pleasure Concerning them formerly We Know the present Circumstances of our affairs will not allow that they be so repaired as they ought to be yet what is most necessary ought to be done with all Dilligence such as the Mounting of the Guns on sufficient Carages And the repairing of the Ammunition houses It is obvious That if ane Invasion happen The standing forces Cannot take the field without some field peices Therfore such a number as shall be found needfull ought Imediatly to be mounted and putt in order yow are also now when ther is tyme to doe it deliberatly to appoint persons of undoubted Loyaltie for Comanding of the severall shires and usuall districts And yow are to Consider whither the most effectuall way for giving assistance to our forces will be by modelling the militia or training the fencible men or by taking different methods in the particular shires as yow shall find most fitt We expect your diligence and Care in all these particulars It being equallie necessary for the Support of our Government and your oune safety and preservation Yow are to acquaint us of your poceedings from time to tyme that we may Give our approbation or orders therein And not doubting yow will doe all that is necessary for the ends abovementioned And that in these methods that are easiest and Least expressive to the Countrey We bid yow heartily Farewell Given att our Court at Kensingtone the first day of December 1696 and of our reign the Eight year By his Majesties Command sic subscribitur James Ogilvie.
