Act Bartleman anent two prisoners with the Turks.
Anent a Petition given in to the Lords of their Majesties privy Councill be John Barthellmew in Keirhill in name and be half of John Bartemew and James Key now prisoners in Algeirs with the turks Shewing That the said Archibald Barthellemew and James Key who wer borne within the bounds of the presbytrie of Linlithgow and being Seamen to their trade were in December Jaj vjc nyntie one taken prisoners by the Turks and are keeped ever since prisoners at Algeirs under most grivious and inhumane bondadge and Slaverie and that the said Archibald Bartlemew and James Key have no means goods or moneyes wherwith to pay ther ransome, Which would Amount to thrie hundred dollers, And Seing it was the saids Lords Laudable practise in the like Caices to grant recomendationes for ane piouse and Charitable Collectione to be gathered at such Church doors as the saids Lords should appoint upon the finding Caution that the Collectiones shall be applyed for Ransomeing the prisoners of for returneing the moneyes Collected to be disposed of according to the saids Lords Directories And Therfore humbly Suplicating to the effect aftermentioned The Lords of their majesties privey Councill haveing Considered this petitione given in to them be the above John Bartleman with the Certificats produced therwith They heirby Allow a volunter Collectione to be made at the Church doors of all the parishes within the presbytries of Edinburgh, Dalkeith, Hadingtoune and Linlithgow for ransomeing the above Archibald Bartleman and James Key from ther slaverie Upon Sabath the twentie sixth day of November nixt to come and appoints the saids Collectiones to be payed in to the above John Bartleman In Respect he hath given bond and found Caution acted in the books of privy Councill that the Collectiones2 to be delivered in to him shall be applyed for Ransomeing the above prisoners Or otherwayes that they shall be returned and Delivered to the Clerks of privy Councill to be Disposed upon according as the Lords therof shall give order, And Recomends to the ministers of the severall parishes within the respective presbytries forsaids to make intimatione publictly from their pulpits of this act upon the saboth day Imediatly preceiding the day above appointed for makeing the saids Collectiones.
