Gift in favour of Sir James Ogilvie to be solicitor

William and Mary by the grace of God, king and queen of Great Britain, France and Ireland, and defenders of the faith, to all good men to whom our present letters will have come, greetings. Since we, considering that it was pleasing to us to remove Sir William Lockhart from the office of our solicitor and it will be an inconvenience if we should allow the said office to lie vacant, and that it may be abundantly satisfied to us concerning the exceptional skill and very beautiful traits of character of our beloved Sir James Ogilvie, advocate, with which he is extremely equipped for performing the said duty and office of our solicitor, know therefore that we have nominated, made, constituted and ordained and, by the tenor of the presents, nominate, make, constitute and ordain our said faithful and dear Sir James Ogilvie (during our pleasure only) our solicitor in all our businesses, as much pertaining to our service in all our law courts as to matters of the church. And so we give, grant and assign to the same Sir James Ogilvie (during the interval aforesaid) the said duty and office as our solicitor, with all fees, pensions, fruits, emoluments, profits and casualties and with the privileges and immunities pertaining to it and to be gained by him so fully and freely in all respects and conditions as which another either alone or joined with another may have gained and enjoyed in the same duty and office thus far. Likewise, with full power to him of enjoying and exercising the same in that duty and office in all things touching our service in all our courts and of applying his presence in all causes, actions and disputes as much in our matters as in those relating to the church, and of causing to expedite all our matters in the said courts quickly. And by the presents we request the lords of our privy council that they take up his oath of faithful administration in the said office with all other obligations used and accustomed in similar cases. And we revoke and render ineffective all former commissions to any person or persons as solicitor or our solicitors in the said kingdom and we want this our present commission to the said Sir James Ogilvie to last in full strength (during the aforesaid interval). In testimony whereof, we have ordered our great seal to be appended to the presents. At our court of Kensington, 31 January 1693, and in the fourth year of our reign. By the signature of our supreme lord the king above written. Written to the great seal and registered, 7 February 1693. Subscribed: William Ker. Sealed at Edinburgh, 7 February 1693 foresaid. Subscribed: Alexander Inglis.
