Letter from the council to the king concerning the schem of the militia

The following letter from the council to the king’s majesty concerning the scheme of the militia being read, voted and approved, was signed and ordered to be recorded, whereof the tenor follows:
May it please your majesty, albeit by a former letter we represented to you that there are defects in the present establishment of the militia that without a parliament can hardly be fully amended, yet the present posture of things at home and abroad requiring us in duty to mind your majesty’s service and the kingdom’s security and defence as much as is possible for us, we have thought fit not only to emit a proclamation commanding all the nobility and gentry in the kingdom, whether heritors, wadsetters or liferenters, to be ready upon 48 hours’ advertisement with sufficient horse and arms to attend your majesty’s standard when they shall be required, but also to frame a model of the half of the foot militia such as our present laws allow and to transmit the same to your majesty to be either instantly called out and set on foot by your majesty’s royal command or that your majesty may take any other effectual course that you may judge expedient. This model we have sent to your majesty’s secretary to be presented at your leisure and what your majesty shall be pleased to order therein or in anything else relating to your service shall be most readily and exactly obeyed by, may it please your majesty, your majesty’s most loyal, most faithful and most obedient subjects and servants. Subscribed: Tweeddale chancellor; Douglas; Linlithgow; Lothian; Breadalbane; Tarbat; Belhaven; William, master of Forbes; James Stewart; John Lauder; William Anstruther; Archibald Murray; Patrick Murray; dated at Edinburgh 14 January 1693.
