Act2 The Toun Brewers3 of Edinburgh and liberties therof.

Anent a Petition given in to the Lords of their Majesties privy Councill be the toune of Edinburgh and Liberties therof Shewing That quher over and above the kings excyse of two merk per boll The liquor of ale and bear are now father burthened per pint with thrie penies of additionall excyss to their Majesties and ane Impositione of two penies to the toune of Edinburgh per pint For which additionall burdein it is evident that the pryce of ale and bear ought to ryse proportionally Lyke as de facto It is risen allmost in all other parts over the kingdome Except as to the toune of Edinburgh and liberties wher the difference that hinders this rise which is so Just and naturall is that in other parts the brewer and ventner are the same, and so hath his Libertie to make and take his pryce, Wheras in Edinburgh ane brewers and another vents, and both are at the Discretion of the drinker, Wherby the saids Lords might perceive that their authoritie and regulatione is needfull in this case to be interposed, And seing to the effect that they may brew suficient ale as shall not be returned upon them, And be able to pay the forsaid burthens, and above all that the heritors may have vent and a reasonable and Just pryce for his victuall It was necessary that they be allowed to take at least a plack or four penies more on the pynt of ale to answer for the five pennies of excysse and Imposition which is a moderat recompense And Therfore humbly supplicating to the effect aftermentioned as the said petitione bears The Lords of their Majesties privy Councill haveing Considered this petitione given in to4 them be the above brewers They In respect ther is no answers given in to this petition as wes appointed by a former deliverance theron Doe heirby Allow the petitioners to take a plack or four pennies more for the pynt of ale above the ordinary pryce from the ventner, And allowes the ventner to take the same addition over and above his ordainry pryce, And Recommends to the magistrats of Edinburgh to punish as they should find Just the Contraveeners of this act And Ordaines thir presents to be printed and publictly sold.
