Committie anent highwayes

Anent a Petition given in to the Lords of their majesties privy Councill be My Lord Newbyth Sir Alexander Gilmore of Craigmiller Sir James Dick of Preistfeild William Dick of Graing and other heritors of the shireffdome of Edinburgh Shewing That it being the intrest and advantage of the wholl nation That the kings high wayes and Caulsayes be in a suficient condition for the use of travellers upon the rode And in a speciall maner these leading to and from the city of Edinburgh to quhich most of their Majesties leidges have resort, yet it is humbly represented that the highwayes and Caulseyes leading from the toune of Edinburgh to the Southward by the Borrow Muir leading to Dalkeith upon the east hand And the other to the Bowburne leading to Newbotle and Tweedale upon the west hand And the Cassayes leading from the West Port are so sadely brocken and Decayed that horsses Coatches and Carts Cannot pass that way without trouble and damnage And seing the toune of Edinburgh Which Reaps the cheif advantage by the trade and resort by those roads and are bound and obleidged to repair and hope hold these Calsayes being within their priviledges And that throw their remissnes of late the forsaid high wayes are rendered into that conditione in which they are at present And Therfore Humbly Craveing the saids Lords to ordaine the magistrats of Edinburgh to Repair the saids2 high wayes as the petitioner bears The Lords of their majesties privy Councill haveing Considered this petition given in to them be the above Lord Newbyth and other heritors of the shyre of Midlothian They Recomend3 to the Comittie Appointed for securitie of peace upon the 28 day of June last And adds my Lord Ross to the said Comittie, To call for the magistrats of Edinburgh and conferr with and give order to them anent the high wayes in the petitione And others which they are oblidged to repair And Likwayes anent the other particulars mentioned in the first Reference made to the said Committie In so farr as concernes the saids magistrats And Recomends to them to meet the morrow at nyne in the morning and report to the Councill in the afternoon
