Proclamation against tumults in Edinburgh
The proclamatione underwreitten being read votted and approven wes signed and ordered to be recorded whereof the tenor followes William and Mary be the Grace of [God] King and Queen of great Brittain France and Ireland defenders of the faith To […] macers of our privy Councill messengers at armes our shirreffs in that pairt Conjunctlly and severally specially constitute Greeting For as much as by the frequent tumults raised within the toun of Edinburgh by Loose and disorderly persones speciallie Journeymen prentices and other ill disposed servants and young men Great Inconveniencies fall out And many Innocent people are hurt mutilat and killed For preventing whereof And that all our Leedges may know the hazard and danger they Runne by Conveening or Joyneing together in a tumultuary way, or by being on the streets aither when the guaird of this citie or our standing forces are Commanded to suppress any such tumult Wee with advyce of our privie Councill prohibite and discharge all tumultuarie and ryotous meetings of any persones thereof under the highest paines of Law And with advyce forsaid requyre and Command all persones whatsomever upon any appearance of tumult ryot or rout in the streets and drawing out of the guairds to suppress the same Imediatly to retire themselves home to there oune houses respective and keep themselves within doors under the pain of being repute and holden accessory to the saids tumults And for the better suppressing and dispersing of any such tumultuary and ryotous meetings And wee authorize and Impower the Magistrates of our said burgh to order the officers of any of our standing forces who shall be called in within the said burgh to the effect forsaid alswell as the train-bands and guairds of our toun of Edinburgh to fyre upon and shoot with bulletts all such as shall so assemble themselves in such tumults and ryotts with armes or make resistance to the magistrates of our said burgh or forces Imployed for suppressing thereof and to the effect our pleasure in the premises may be knowen Our Will is And wee charge yow strictly and Command that Incontinent these our letters seen ye pass to the mercat croce of Edinburgh and by open proclamation make Intimatione hereof That all may know there hazard And ordaines these presents to be printed Given under our signet at Edinburgh the third day of march and of our reigne the fourth year Jaj vjc nyntie three.
