Letter from the King Indemnifying deserters

Letter from the Kings Majestie to the Councell daited the tuenty third day of March last for Issuing furth a proclamatione promising Indemnity to all souldiers who shall returne to their service uithin tuo months after the date of the proclamatione Redd and ordored to be recorded And Recommended to the Lord Advocat to prepare a proclamatione for Indemnifying such as shall offer themselves to the government

Right trustie and right uell Beloved Cousine and Counceller Right trustie and entirely beloved Cousings and Councellors Right trustie and uell beloved Cousings and Councellors Right trustie and uell beloved Councellors Trustie and uell beloved Councellors and trustie and uell beloved Councellors Ue Greet yow uell uheras ue understand that a Great many souldiers of our forces in Scotland that have deserted their collours does skulk and hyde themselves in obscure places and are affraid to return to their collours by reasone of the severity of military Laues Against Deserters Ue for remeid therof Have thought fitt and doe heirby authorize and Impoure yow to Issue furth a proclamatione In our name promising and assuring a full and free Indemnity to all and every one of these deserters who shall returne to their respective collours within tuo months after the date of the said proclamatione with Certificatione that if they shall not come and take the benefite of that our gracious Indemnity within the space forsaid They may expect noe mercy if at any tyme heirafter they come to be seased on and uith such Certificatione as yow shall Judge most expedient for making that our proclamatione effectuall and in this yee are not to faill For doing wherof these presents shall be to yow a sufficient warrand And so ue bid yow heartily farewell Given at our Court at Kensingtoune the tuenty third day of march Jaj vic and nyntie tuo three tuo2 By his Majesties Command sic Subscribitur J Johnstoun
